WWE Smackdown results [September 28,2012]

(PHOTOS)
Four days after using the WMD to knockout both Brodus Clay and Tensai on Raw, Big Show came to SmackDown to declare that he was back and that he wanted the World Heavyweight Title. Recalling the embarrassment of his last World Title reign, which lasted 45 seconds, the giant stated that when the Superstar that defeated him, Daniel Bryan, lost that title in 18 seconds at WrestleMania, it was a true turning point in his career. He then stated, in no uncertain terms, that he was the one Superstar on the roster that could beat current World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus.

Big Show was soon interrupted by Randy Orton, the serpentine competitor that he would face in the SmackDown main event to try and become the No. 1 contender to The Great White’s championship gold at WWE Hell in a Cell. The Viper said that if The World’s Largest Athlete thought he would stand in between him and his 10th World Title, he would “not be standing for much longer.”

As the fierce adversaries contemplated whether the main event would see someone get “bit by the RKO or hit with a KO,” Alberto Del Rio emerged, demanding that — because he was “cheated” in his World Title Match at Night of Champions and “better than both Orton and Big Show combined” — both Superstars would be moving to the back of the line. But as The Mexican Aristocrat entered the ring, The Viper wasted no time hitting Del Rio with the RKO.

Before Randy Orton could face Big Show, he was attacked in the back by Alberto Del Rio, the Superstar he hit with the RKO at the start of the show. (WATCH) The Mexican Aristocrat then tried to take his prey’s place in the No. 1 Contender’s Match, only to be stopped by the now-injured Viper. After taking his attacker down, WWE’s Apex Predator insisted on facing the giant anyway, battling for the right to face World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus at WWE Hell in a Cell.

In the ensuing showdown, the courageous Orton attempted time and time again to overcome not only the fierce giant, but also his own injured midsection. The wrath that he had to endure for the majority of the contest was so vicious, that when he finally regrouped and countered the chokeslam to hit the RKO, he couldn’t seem to execute it fully. Possibly for this reason, Show kicked out of the dreaded finishing maneuver! The giant then hit two chokeslams for the huge win, making him the new No. 1 contender to The Great White’s World Title at WWE Hell on a Cell.
After the bell, following an argument with a fan, The World’s Largest Athlete returned to the ring and hit his fallen opponent with the WMD.

WWE’s Apex Predator continues his recent run of success with a strong performance against Dolph Ziggler at Night of Champions and an impressive encore in tag team action on SmackDown.

Prior to his huge SmackDown tag team match, Alberto Del Rio was informed by SmackDown GM Booker T that — in light of the controversy surrounding the reinstatement of the Brogue Kick, just moments before Sunday’s World Title Match — if he scored a victory, he may get another opportunity at World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus.
In an absolutely chaotic moment in the action that followed, The Mexican Aristocrat attempted to lock The Great White in the Cross Armbreaker, However, the resilient Celtic Warrior had enough presence of mind to counter and push his adversary into The Viper’s waiting RKO. Moments later, Ziggler — the legal Superstar for his team — attempted to use the Money in the Bank briefcase as a weapon, only to meet with the Brogue Kick and ultimately the defeat at the hand of the first Irish-born World Heavyweight Champion.

Randy Orton had one of the harder-won victories of his life against Dolph Ziggler at Night of Champions, but there was no rest for the weary as The Viper clashed with the towering Tensai just 24 hours later. And make no mistake: Tensai did not make it easy for The Viper. The big man made a point to target Orton's lower back, mauling The Viper with vicious power maneuvers and attempting to keep The Apex Predator grounded with a series of punishing elbows and strikes. The contest was every bit as brutal as their match on SmackDown, and ultimately, the result was the same.

Orton's comeback came following a crushing nerve hold from Tensai that brought The Viper to his knees. The Apex Predator then withstood a series of kidney shots before taking Tensai down with a powerslam and hauling him over the ropes for a hanging DDT. Hobbled by Tensai's strikes, The Viper still found it in him to fell Tensai with an RKO, securing his second win in as many nights.

WWE’s Apex Predator slithers up one spot on the list after a disqualification victory on Raw and a win over the monstrous Tensai on SmackDown.

Randy Orton def. Dolph Ziggler

BOSTON — The intense rivalry between Randy Orton and Dolph Ziggler hit its breaking point at Night of Champions, as The Viper defeated Mr. Money in the Bank. While Orton vs. Ziggler was the only match in which a title wasn’t up for grabs at the pay-per-view, it thrilled the WWE Universe at the sold-out TD Garden and watching around the world. (PHOTOS)
First, mouthy manager Vickie Guerrero introduced Ziggler and ordered the WWE Universe to “stand up and show your respect for the future World Heavyweight Champion.” Then, Orton entered the ring with a fierce determination.
These bitter rivals quickly locked up, showing just how evenly matched they were. When Orton took the upper hand, Ziggler refused to back down. Orton hit a monstrous powerslam, but The Showoff countered, and soon after hit The Viper with a dropkick off the top rope.
Vickie watched from ringside, clutching Ziggler’s Money in the Bank briefcase, and cheered him on as he dropped elbow after elbow on Orton. Then, in true Ziggler fashion, he showed off in the center of the ring, doing a handstand while punishing his opponent, keeping his head and neck locked up. Mr. Money in the Bank tried to wear down The Apex Predator, but Orton twice got to his feet, proving just how powerful he is.
The rivals’ match turned into a brawl, as the fight moved outside of the ring. Orton hit Ziggler with a DDT off the barricade and then beat the official’s 10-count back into the ring, dragging a dazed Ziggler with him. Orton went for the pin, but the clever Ziggler kept a foot on the ropes. The Viper coiled for the RKO, but Ziggler countered. When it appeared the bleached blond Superstar had the Sleeper Hold locked in en route to victory, Orton lifted his opponent into the air and finally hit him with a devastating RKO for the victory.
With near-fall after near-fall, it was obvious that Orton and Ziggler were evenly matched. The Showoff proved why he’s one of the key up-and-comers in WWE, almost “stealing the show” as his tights read. But the nine-time World Champion used his experience and athleticism to outsmart and outshine the resident showoff at Night of Champions.

Randy Orton def. Tensai

(WATCH | PHOTOS)
Just two days before he will face Mr. Money in the Bank, Dolph Ziggler, at Night of Champions, Randy Orton asked to battle Tensai one-on-one for the first-time ever.
While Tensai truly threw his weight around, using every part of himself to overpower WWE’s Apex Predator to give him a brutal beatdown, The Viper would roar back. After knocking Sakamoto from the apron and withstanding a last ditch assault that nearly put him away, Orton overcame Tensai with the RKO.
As the smoke cleared, Vickie Guerrero emerged, speaking for Dolph Ziggler while, at the same time, claiming that he had taken the night off. Orton refuted The Queen Divas’ claims that he would be beat by Ziggler this Sunday and that he would never be the World Champion again, before anticipating The Showoff’s sneak attack and thwarting his efforts. Randy Orton def. WWE Champion CM Punk via DQ

PHOTOS | VIDEO

The WWE Universe spoke, and it was Randy Orton who slithered forth to challenge WWE Champion CM Punk in a RAWactive Match. As the Montreal crowd showered The Apex Predator with cheers, Punk wasted no time in taking it to his longtime foil, dropping Orton to the mat with consecutive shoulders before The Viper began to rally. Punk responded quickly, driving Orton into the corner and bringing him to his knees with a series of knees and kicks to the gut before dragging him out to the center and hitting a backbreaker, slowing The Apex Predator's momentum for a moment.

Punk relied on his ground game to keep Orton at bay, wrangling The Viper with a sequence of headlocks and technical strikes until Orton got his second win, mounting an offensive flurry that sent Punk rolling outside the ring. The champion contemplated his options for a moment before heading up the ramp, seemingly content to take a loss via count-out.

Orton was not, however, as The Apex Predator streaked up the ramp and hauled Punk unceremoniously back into the ring. Business quickly picked up, as Orton rolled Punk to the announce table and bashed his head against the commentary desk before the two returned to the ring and Punk gained the upper hand, trapping Orton in a contorting abdominal stretch and later pounding The Viper with an elbow from the top rope.

Looking to put the match away, Punk left Orton prone on the mat and ascended the turnbuckle to perform his elbow drop, but Orton had life in him yet, thwarting The Second City Saint's effort and sending him airborne with a superplex for a near-fall.

The Viper took control of the match next, slamming Punk with a series of bone-rattling clotheslines and setting him up for the hanging DDT. The champion rallied, though, springboarding off the ropes and flooring Orton with a flying clothesline. Signaling for the Go to Sleep, Punk prepared to put Orton to bed. But The Apex Predator recovered quickly, elbowing his way off Punk's shoulders and executing the hanging DDT on The Second City Saint before signaling for the RKO ...

Until, that is, a certain Showoff decided to get involved.

Dolph Ziggler sprinted from the backstage area, ganging up on Orton with Punk and seemingly leaving The Viper in ruins ...

Until, that is, a certain "King" decided to get involved.

Jerry "The King" Lawler was the next to enter the fray, rising up from the commentary table and joining in on the beatdown when Raw General Manager AJ Lee appeared, announcing that Orton and Lawler would team against Punk and Ziggler.

Randy Orton & Jerry Lawler def. WWE Champion CM Punk & Dolph Ziggler

PHOTOS | VIDEO

The impromptu tag team match pitting Randy Orton & Jerry Lawler against CM Punk & Dolph Ziggler was meant to restore order to a deteriorating situation after Punk and Orton's match descended into chaos.

But the madness only amplified, as Orton and Ziggler traded furious blows to open the contest, with Orton gaining the upper hand over The Showoff by bouncing him off the ropes for a suplex. Lawler quickly tagged in, opening his second match in three weeks by unleashing not one, but two flying fists on a prone Ziggler. The Showoff recovered enough to mount some offense of his own, laying a series of dropkicks on "The King" and tying him up in a sleeper hold before disrespectfully smearing his boot all over the WWE Hall of Famer's face.

Against all odds, though, Lawler reached deep down and found a second wind, recovering from a humiliating beatdown enough to plant Ziggler with a thunderous backdrop that opened the window for him to tag in Randy Orton. The Viper came at The Showoff hard, hauling him over the ropes for the hanging DDT, but Ziggler tossed Orton outside the ring to cut The Apex Predator's attack short.

Rather than tag in, however, Punk remained on the apron until Paul Heyman himself came sauntering down the ramp. Oblivious to the match unfolding behind him, Punk hopped down from the apron and conferred with Heyman for a few moments. Punk, none the wiser (and not concerned in the slightest) when Orton foiled Ziggler with an RKO to win the contest and send The Showoff packing ... did not make the most ignominious of exits, however: He simply retrieved his title and, still in conversation with the mad scientist, walked away.

Later, Matt Striker approached the twosome and demanded clairification on the nature of their relationship. Punk simply echoed his first "pipe bomb" and replied, with no small amount of venom in his voice: "I'm a Paul Heyman guy."

Dolph Ziggler def. Randy Orton

PHOTOS | VIDEO

Dolph Ziggler's match against Randy Orton (a rematch of a closely contested bout on last Friday's SmackDown) began not with physicality, but with an ominous proclamation from Vickie Guerrero, who interrupted her typical introduction of The Showoff to tease an important announcement she'd be making later in the evening.

Orton and Ziggler wasted no time in picking up where they left off on SmackDown, trading shoulder blocks with each other to start the contest, while Orton attempted to incapacitate The Showoff with vicious kicks to the body. Orton continued the punishment by executing a flashy suplex that saw him bounce Ziggler off the ropes, a move The Showoff himself might have appreciated were he not the recipient. The Viper's assault on Ziggler was relentless, as the former World Heavyweight Champion hauled Ziggler outside the ropes and administered a stiff beating to Mr. Money in the Bank outside the apron.

Ziggler rallied, though, making it back into the ring in an attempt to mount an offensive sequence against The Apex Predator. After suffering Orton's wrath for much of the contest, Ziggler finally found success in this regard, felling The Viper with a swinging neckbreaker and exploiting Orton's past shoulder issues by ramming him into the barrier outside the ring. After landing a pair of elbow drops, The Showoff attempted to seal his victory by ensnaring Orton in a headlock (true to form, Ziggler displayed his peerless athleticism by executing a textbook neck bridge while he did it). The rally was enough to tilt the contest back into Ziggler's favor, as he put in enough work to set up for a rare top rope maneuver while Orton lied prone on the mat.

And then, as has happened so many times before, The Viper struck, tripping up Ziggler on the turnbuckles and sending The Showoff airborne with a superplex. His momentum rising and the voices in his head reaching a fever pitch, Orton attempted to set up his signature sequence before Ziggler countered, using The Apex Predator's own fury against him and surprising Orton with a roll-up pin, grabbing a fistful of The Viper's tights to keep him down for a dubious, if hard-fought, victory.

However, no sooner had the bell tolled than Ziggler's thunder was stolen by Intercontinental Champion The Miz, who strolled past The Showoff and took a seat at the commentary booth next to Michael Cole.

12: Randy Orton

WWE’s Apex Predator missed an opportunity to put Dolph Ziggler in his place on Raw, Randy Orton made sure Damien Sandow did not get away so easily on SmackDown.

WWE Smackdown results [September 7,2012]

Randy Orton def. Damien Sandow

(WATCH | PHOTOS)
One week after running back to the dressing room and losing to World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus via count-out, Damien Sandow interrupted a scheduled match to criticize Booker T and the WWE Universe. While he insisted that the GM had put him into a contest for which he was not prepared, he berated fans on social media for calling him a "coward" and "craven" throughout the week for his actions on SmackDown.

Randy Orton soon interrupted Sandow’s tirade, informing the self-professed "Intellectual Savior of the Masses" that he had convinced Booker T to change his impending match from his original opponent to Sandow himself. Just as the bout began, however, Mr. Money in the Bank, Dolph Ziggler, joined the SmackDown announce team.

Though Sandow continued his streak of avoiding a pinfall loss in WWE with an impressive offense, he chose to once again retreat from his match, once The Viper gained the advantage and was about to hit him with the RKO. As a result, Orton won the match by count-out.

Blocking Ziggler’s exit from the ringside area after the bell, WWE’s Apex Predator wasted little time initiating a fierce post-match brawl with The Showoff. This went on until Sandow re-emerged to attack Orton from behind. Before the WWE Universe could blink, The Viper turned the tide, introducing Sandow to the business end of a ring-shaking RKO afterall!

DTA: 15 Superstars You Can't Trust

15: Randy Orton

Randy Orton is one of WWE’s most popular Superstars, but that doesn’t mean you should turn your back on him. The Viper’s prone to “snapping” at a moment’s notice, which makes it difficult for him to play well with others. Midway through a Six-Man Tag Team Match in early 2010, he decided he was through with Legacy underlings Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. After Rhodes tagged himself into action, WWE’s Apex Predator coldly draped Rhodes over the middle rope and brought him into the ring the hard way, via a dome-compressing DDT. (He followed up with an RKO on the outside floor for DiBiase.) (WATCH)

In 2011, after a brawl with heated rival with Wade Barrett was broken up by several Superstars, Orton’s temper red-lined and he wound up delivering painful RKOs to the intervening grapplers, who included fan-favorites Trent Barreta and The Usos. More recently, The Viper unremorsefully went after Sheamus. Teaming with The Great White against Chris Jericho & Alberto Del Rio this past May, Orton did not take kindly to being Brogue Kicked by Sheamus, albeit inadvertently. Following his pinfall loss, WWE’s Apex Predator repaid The Celtic Warrior with a jarring — and largely unprovoked — RKO.

Being WWE’s Apex Predator means looking out for No. 1, and Orton has never lost sight of that.

It was a good week for The Viper. On Raw, he partnered with Sheamus to take down Alberto Del Rio & Dolph Ziggler. In singles action on SmackDown, Randy Orton once again bested Ziggler.

Randy Orton def. Dolph Ziggler

(WATCH | PHOTOS)
After Randy Orton’s surprise RKO ruined Dolph Ziggler’s chance at cashing in his Money in the Bank contract on Sheamus last week on SmackDown, The Showoff faced The Viper, looking for retribution.
The showdown that followed was a hard-fought match from start to finish. In the final moments, Ziggler showed incredible determination, kicking out of both a superplex and a hanging DDT. However, when Ziggler missed a Zig Zag, it ended up costing him big. Before The Showoff could regroup, he fell prey to the searing RKO, giving a huge win to WWE’s Apex Predator.
Before Lilian Garcia could declare Orton the winner, though, Vickie Guerrero grabbed a microphone and Ziggler’s Money in the Bank contract, reinforcing that her client was still The Showoff and still had that golden opportunity. But this battle and this night went to The Viper, Randy Orton.
